Their findings will be published today,\u00a0April 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a02019, in a study in\u00a0Advanced Science.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, scientists in regenerative medicine \u2014 a field positioned at the crossroads of biology and technology \u2014 have been successful in printing only simple tissues without blood vessels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1364\" style=\"width: 2960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1364 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2960\" height=\"2155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3.jpg 2960w, https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3-768x559.jpg 768w, https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Fig-3-1024x746.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2960px) 100vw, 2960px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 3D vascularized engineered heart | Photo: Tel Aviv University and Advanced Science<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart replete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers\u201d, says\u00a0Prof. Tal Dvir of TAU\u2019s\u00a0School of Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering,\u00a0Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology\u00a0and Sagol Center for Regenerative Biotechnology, who led the research for the study.<\/p>\n<p>Heart disease is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States. Heart transplantation is currently the only treatment available to patients with end-stage heart failure. Given the dire shortage of heart donors, the need to develop new approaches to regenerate the diseased heart is urgent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis heart is made from human cells and patient-specific biological materials. In our process these materials serve as the bio-inks,\u00a0substances made of sugars and proteins that can be used for 3D printing of complex tissue models\u201d, Prof. Dvir says. \u201cPeople have managed to 3D-print the structure of a heart in the past, but not with cells or with blood vessels. The cellular and a-cellular materials of the tissue were then separated.\u00a0While the cells were reprogrammed to become pluripotent stem cells and efficiently differentiated to cardiac or endothelial cells, the\u00a0extracellular matrix\u00a0(ECM), a three-dimensional network of\u00a0extracellular macromolecules, such as collagen and glycoproteins,\u00a0were processed into a personalized hydrogel that served as the printing \u201cink\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The differentiated cells were then mixed with the bio-inks and were used to 3D-print patient-specific, immune-compatible cardiac patches with blood vessels and, subsequently, an entire heart.<\/p>\n<p>According to Prof. Dvir, the use of \u201cnative\u201d patient-specific materials is crucial to successfully engineering tissues and organs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1366\" style=\"width: 563px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/\u05d8\u05dc-\u05d3\u05d1\u05d9\u05e8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1366 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/\u05d8\u05dc-\u05d3\u05d1\u05d9\u05e8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/\u05d8\u05dc-\u05d3\u05d1\u05d9\u05e8.jpg 563w, https:\/\/forbes.co.il\/e\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/\u05d8\u05dc-\u05d3\u05d1\u05d9\u05e8-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flowchart of the process | By Tel Aviv University and Advanced Science<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe biocompatibility of engineered materials is crucial to eliminating the risk of implant rejection, which jeopardizes the success of such treatments\u201d, Prof. Dvir says. \u201cIdeally, the biomaterial should possess the same biochemical, mechanical and topographical properties of the patient\u2019s own tissues. Here, we can report a simple approach to 3D-print thick, vascularized and perusable cardiac tissues that completely match the immunological, cellular, biochemical and anatomical properties of the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are now planning on culturing the printed hearts in the lab and \u201cteaching them to behave\u201d like hearts, Prof. Dvir says. They then plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart in animal models.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to develop the printed heart further\u201d, he concludes. \u201cThe cells need to form a pumping ability; they can currently contract, but we need them to work together. Our hope is that we will succeed and prove our method\u2019s efficacy and usefulness. Maybe, in ten years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted
