But in the age of AI agents, that conversation is being completely rewritten. In my conversation with Avihay Nathan, SVP and Head of AI, Data &amp; Research at CyberArk, it became clear: the challenge ahead isn\u2019t just about identity\u2014it\u2019s about agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The New Identity Crisis: A Conversation with Avihay Nathan, SVP of AI at CyberArk\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gr6bwS4KZqw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avihay brings a unique vantage point. He\u2019s been building in AI for nearly 15 years\u2014from PayPal fraud detection systems powered by 30 features to CyberArk\u2019s new AI-driven architecture for identity security. And yet, even with all that experience, the current moment feels unprecedented. \u201cWe\u2019ve created agents that behave like humans but scale like machines,\u201d he told me. \u201cAnd they\u2019re spawning in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That shift has massive implications. The traditional tools of identity management\u2014user directories, group policies, role-based access\u2014simply weren\u2019t built for a world where ten autonomous agents can be created on the fly, granted permissions, take action, and disappear before a human even notices. These agents aren\u2019t just running scripts. They\u2019re making decisions. \u201cThey have reasoning,\u201d Avihay said. \u201cThey choose their next-best action\u2014like a user would. But they move at machine speed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CyberArk is approaching this challenge with a three-part framework: Secure from AI, Secure with AI, and Secure of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecure from AI\u201d is about defending against new threat vectors\u2014identities that look human, act like code, and behave unpredictably. \u201cSecure with AI\u201d focuses on augmenting the defender: building copilots that help analysts cut through alert fatigue and reduce time-to-value. And \u201cSecure of AI\u201d is the hardest challenge of all: protecting organizations from the very systems and agents they themselves are deploying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avihay pointed out that many customers come to CyberArk not with a plan\u2014but with panic. \u201cThey\u2019re overwhelmed,\u201d he said. \u201cThey don\u2019t know what they don\u2019t know. They\u2019re seeing agent demos everywhere\u2014one to schedule meetings, another to read your face\u2014but they have no idea what these agents actually access.\u201d The result? A trust crisis. And a growing expectation that their security vendor will have the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What impressed me most was the clarity with which CyberArk is mapping the new agent lifecycle. From discovery (\u201chow many new agents spun up in the last 24 hours?\u201d) to observability, access control, behavior monitoring, and compliance\u2014all the way to sunset and governance. \u201cIt\u2019s not enough to know what an agent does,\u201d Avihay said. \u201cYou have to know why, when, and how it acts. You need context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s the real insight. Identity without context is meaningless. In the AI-native world, agents can spawn and act without history. Zero-shot behavior is the new normal. So the only way to secure these systems is to anchor them in business context\u2014what data they touch, what task they perform, and what role they play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building toward that vision hasn\u2019t been simple. As Avihay shared, CyberArk had to go through its own transformation: from a highly successful public company to one that must now think like an AI-native startup. That meant shifting from innovation teams dabbling in prototypes to building a centralized AI and data group with full ownership\u2014from research to production. It also meant driving cultural change. \u201cWe had to educate the entire organization,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the CPO to the engineers\u2014to help them see why data matters, and what\u2019s at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result? Dozens of hires in AI across Israel. A new internal methodology for designing data-driven security products. And a mindset shift across the company\u2014one that sees identity not as a static attribute but as a dynamic narrative unfolding in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avihay\u2019s view is that the agent explosion will continue\u2014because business demands it. \u201cCISOs can only hold back for so long,\u201d he said. \u201cEventually, the pressure for productivity wins. And when it does, we need to be there to help them do it securely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, in many ways, is the new security promise: not just to block threats, but to enable innovation. Not just to say \u201cno,\u201d but to help organizations move forward\u2014confidently, and safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&nbsp;Michael Matias is the CEO and Co-Founder of Clarity, an AI-powered cybersecurity startup backed by Bessemer Venture Partners and Walden Catalyst.
