But Amir Fishelov, managing partner at Square One Labs and, before that, co-founder of SolarEdge, believes that narrative is incomplete. What\u2019s more, it is potentially misleading about the current state of high tech, especially in Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if Google will win the race or OpenAI,\u201d Fishelov says. \u201cThey all need the same infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spoke to Fishelov about Square One Labs, a venture creation and investment platform that helps founders build transformative tech companies from the earliest stages. Founded in early 2024, it blends early-stage funding with operational support, providing labs, facilities, mentoring, and strategic guidance to turn big ideas into real companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is deliberately focused on what Fishelov calls \u201cphysical infrastructure for AI\u201d: energy, semiconductors, robotics, and the hardware systems that make large-scale AI possible. While software continues to move quickly, he argues that the real bottlenecks sit much deeper in the stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Israel Can Win the AI Boom - 0048, Amir Fishelov\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M8ZN8ELqVrY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooking into AI, we figured out there\u2019s lots of opportunity in the software space,\u201d he says. \u201cBut there\u2019s a huge opportunity on the actual infrastructure for AI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The logic makes sense. Training and running advanced AI systems requires enormous amounts of energy, compute, and physical reliability. Regardless of which models dominate, the same foundational systems must exist underneath them. \u201cAll the basic software layers, all of these are critical infrastructure that any solution for AI needs,\u201d Fishelov says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This focus is informed by experience. At SolarEdge, Fishelov helped scale energy and semiconductor systems globally, selling more than 200 million units of proprietary semiconductors. That operational background shapes Square One Labs\u2019 investment thesis today. \u201cWe just came from these worlds,\u201d he said. \u201cEnergy is our bread and butter. We also saw what happens in manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike consumer software, infrastructure businesses operate on long timelines and demand precision early. \u201cDeeptech companies were hard 20 years ago,\u201d Fishelov says. \u201cThey\u2019re still hard today.\u201d In these sectors, missing early accuracy can be fatal. \u201cNot hitting a target fast can cost the company three to four years in terms of capital and runway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That difficulty, however, is exactly what creates defensible moats. \u201cThe moat is very high,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce they penetrate into the market and you have a differentiated solution\u2026 you can be in the game for the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fishelov points to energy as a clear example. New systems don\u2019t just need to be cleaner\u2014they must be cheaper and more reliable than technologies built over a century. \u201cYou\u2019re competing with gas solutions, oil solutions, whatever, which were built here for the past 100 plus years,\u201d he says. \u201cNow you need to build a new solution which is more cost-competitive than that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Square One Labs investment in geothermal energy reflects this approach. By developing more efficient drilling methods, the company aims to deliver \u201ccheaper energy, green energy, and available 24-7 energy,\u201d Fishelov says\u2014an infrastructure-level improvement that benefits any AI system layered on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI itself, he adds, is accelerating deep-tech development rather than replacing it. \u201cAI can help you understand a much broader range of topics,\u201d he says, speeding up research, simulation, and material discovery. But it doesn\u2019t remove the need for physical systems that work reliably at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I enjoyed speaking to Fishelov, who emphasized that the future of AI will depend less on who writes
