Two Friends Take On Health Drink Giants with Unlikely Ingredients

Friends and eventual co-founders Nathanael Smith and Matthew Trost had a vision: to take on the giants of the functional food market with a new kind of beverage that tasted great, had low calories, gave an energy boost, and promoted long-term health. “I would start the day feeling energized, but come afternoon, all that strength would dissipate into a slump. I would be in and out of work as two different people,” recalls Smith. “The energy drinks I grew accustomed to were not effective nor healthy.”

“We knew we were up against giants,” admits Trost. “Nonetheless, we believed in our vision and knew there was a demand for something better and healthier. Our initiative supercharges like coffee, but without the jitters and other negative side effects.”

Drawing inspiration from their experiences with fatigue and burnout, the Superoot duo began experimenting with various ingredients, from ginger and turmeric to maca and ginseng. Superoot’s biggest edge over its market counterparts would be that it was—in Smith’s words—“Rooted in nature.”

A Natural Take on Energy-Boosting Beverages

As Superoot gains visibility in a crowded functional foods market, it faced its fair share of skepticism from industry insiders. Regardless, Smith and Trost remained confident in the science behind their product and the testimonials of satisfied customers.

“We knew we had something special,” says Smith, reflecting on Superoot’s early days. “Still, it was still a gamble. We were asking people to rethink everything they knew about energy drinks and supplements. Luckily, there is a steadily growing market for what we invented: people who want to make a shift to a healthier lifestyle while still indulging in a tasty beverage.”

Superoot quickly gained a loyal following of health-conscious consumers who appreciated its natural ingredients and sustainable philosophy. Word of mouth spread, and before long, Superoot was flying off the proverbial shelves.
