Notes of Hope: ‘Concerto for Peace’ as a Voice for Advocacy

On September 18, 2024, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris will host a musical event that is set to leave a lasting impression. Celebrated pianist, composer and human rights advocate Omar Harfouch will perform his “Concerto for Peace” alongside the Béziers Méditerranée Symphony Orchestra. Under the skilled direction of conductor Mathieu Bonnin, this concert aims to bring a message of harmony and hope. Following the Paris performance, Harfouch and his ensemble of talented musicians will take the stage again for an encore in the United Nations Geneva, two days later.

“If there are two things the world needs now, it’s music for the soul and awareness of the wars affecting people in various parts of the world,” shares Harfouch, underlining his hope for peace and solidarity, a cause to which he has been long committed.

Although Omar Harfouch is well-known in the European classical music world today, his early years were marked by significant challenges. Growing up in war-torn Lebanon, he turned to the piano as a source of comfort and creativity.  The instrument that he taught himself how to play has become his tool for inspiring and uplifting others.

The Essence of “Concerto for Peace”

Harfouch raises awareness about societal issues through his symphonies.

His latest piece, “Concerto for Peace,” is a 17-minute work that serves as a powerful call for global unity. Inspired by his personal journey and dedication to humanitarian causes, Harfouch, together with orchestrator Houtaf Khoury, has created a composition that wraps the audience in a comforting embrace. The music encourages listeners to pause, reflect, and imagine a world where peace is the norm.

The program also features “Tripoli,” which pays tribute to Harfouch’s hometown, adding a personal touch of history and cultural pride. Another highlight is “Save One Life, You Save Humanity,” a piece inspired by teachings from the Talmud and Qur’an on the profound impact of individual acts of kindness. This composition was premiered by Harfouch in a historic concert last December at the European Commission’s Berlaymont building in Brussels, coinciding with an EU Council meeting focused on global security challenges.

“Creating ‘Tripoli’ allowed me to channel the essence of my hometown’s spirit, blending its rich cultural heritage with my musical voice,” shares Harfouch. “With ‘Save One Life, You Save Humanity,’ I wanted to convey the immaculate power of kindness, illustrating how even the smallest acts can create ripples of positive change. These pieces are close to my heart, representing my belief in the enduring impact of music and humanity.”

Having been his home for over thirty years, Paris, one of the world’s most iconic cities, is the perfect place for him to launch an initiative that appeals to both classical music lovers and advocates for peace.

The French capital is renowned for its artistic legacy and cultural vibrance. This concert is poised to be a memorable experience for all in attendance.

A Night to Remember in Paris: Celebrating the Unbreakable Human Spirit

At this point, it is evident that the “Concerto for Peace” is more than just a concert; it celebrates the human spirit and all its wonder. As “Concerto for Peace” notes gear up to fill the air, they convey hope, unity, and the enduring quest for peace.

“We are looking forward to delivering a performance that we can all be proud of,” Omar Harfouch concludes. “May the echoes of this concerto inspire us to embrace our shared humanity and work together toward a world where peace and compassion are not just ideals, but realities.”
