Leadership that Dreams – and Realizes

Benny Biton is one of the most prominent mayors in Israel. He serves as the mayor of Dimona, holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the Local Government, serves as the Chairman of the Development Towns Forum, and heads significant boards of directors. With two full terms of action behind him, he continues into a third term full of strategic plans.

Biton’s work as mayor naturally divides into three main parts: construction and development, strategic economic growth with an emphasis on tourism and innovation, and nurturing and enhancing quality of life indicators with an emphasis on education.

Dimona’s education system is award-winning. As evidence, Dimona is the only authority in Israel that has managed to win three education awards, with no less than half of the municipal budget invested in this important field. The system is characterized by schools leading innovation, well-equipped kindergartens, quality teaching staff, award-winning robotics teams, drone teams, and physics, science, and innovation tracks, alongside arts and humanities education.

Regarding strategic growth, Biton is what they call “crazy about it”. He has put behind years of mental stagnation and with a lot of creativity and ambition leads real revolutions. Recently, two mega-projects in the field of tourism were brought for approval: The first is an indoor water park, similar to the sophisticated parks scattered throughout Europe, at a total cost of 120 million dollars for the project. The park will include various complexes, water slides, hot pools, and more.

In addition, a tourist village is expected to be built on the outskirts of Dimona, near the Nabataean city of Mamshit, ranging between a glamping complex and a resort in the heart of the desert. The park will include water areas, a canal that passes between all accommodation units, leisure and entertainment areas, and a tourism experience unlike anything seen in Israel.

One of the notable actions is the construction momentum that the city leadership is leading with new neighborhoods planned to be built. The most prominent among them is the Rotem neighborhood, which will include no less than 2,200 “build your own home” plots, all based on the concept that those who choose to live in Dimona – will have the opportunity for maximum quality of life at affordable prices. This number is unprecedented. In fact, this is the first time that the State of Israel has approved construction and development on such a scale within a city, including different types of construction, including dense construction.

With the signing of the agreement with the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the announcement of marketing 10,000 units, there were those who cast great doubt on Biton’s move, who managed to accomplish the task within a decade. Now he’s looking forward to the next goal. In recent years, Dimona has become an intriguing destination for entrepreneurs and investors who identify the potential of the place. Alongside the strategic plans, tax benefits, personal security, affordable housing, and excellent educational opportunities stands a leadership that dreams and realizes – Dimona is undoubtedly a place that’s very much worth living in.
